New Orleans couldn’t offer a more appropriate musical backdrop for Jeremy Joyce, whose genre-defying songs are born out of Jeremy’s macro-level interest in music history and his micro-level interest in what makes songs tick.
“You can break all the musical rules,” says Jeremy. “No one looks at you sideways if you are writing out of four or five different traditions,” he says. Indeed, one glance at the songs sung or written by Allen Toussaint and Dr. John provides ready evidence of the Crescent City’s long obsession with mixing musical traditions. Like many of his predecessors, Jeremy Joyce isn't easily pinned into one tradition or scene.
His new single "Come Back to New Orleans" represents a step into the tradition of New Orleans' Mardi Gras music culture. Produced by Mike Harvey ( Hot 8 Brass Band | The Wild Magnolias | Samantha Fish ) this Mardi Gras Anthem has its left foot in 50s RnB and its right foot in outer space.
lyrics
Back to Louisiana
Got to get there just as fast as I can
I'm going back to Louisiana
Got to get there just as fast as I can
I got to find my woman
Before she gets another man
Flying past Memphis
Got no time to see The King
Yes, I'm flying past Memphis
Got no time to see the King
I got to find my baby
I got to hear her sing
Hey Pocky Way, Tipitina, T-T-Tee Nah Nah
(Tipi-tee nah nah nah nah)
She's singing Hey Pocky Way, Tipitina, T-T-Tee Nah Nah
(Tipi-tee nah nah nah nah)
She said come back to New Orleans
You can celebrate The Mardi Gras
Rich folk, poor folk
Black and white
We got to all get together
Throw a party tonight
Dance to the music and we'll take it out into the streets
We let it all hang out in The City of New Orleans
Hey Pocky Way, Tipitina, T-T-Tee Nah Nah
(Tipi-tee nah nah nah nah)
She's singing Hey Pocky Way, Tipitina, T-T-Tee Nah Nah
(Tipi-tee nah nah nah nah)
She said come back to New Orleans
You can celebrate The Mardi Gras
She said come back to New Orleans
You can celebrate The Mardi Gras
(Tipi-tee nah nah nah nah)
She said come back to New Orleans
You can celebrate The Mardi Gras
